Venice, the ageless capital, is all magnificent churches, lavish palazzo and stately bridges, set upon a labyrinth of waterways which are works of art in themselves. A feast for neon-weary eyes, it is a city of supreme beauty and charm, with its exotic aura equalled by its rich museums and galleries, lovely restaurants, shops and jaunty gondoliers plying the canals.
Tunis takes you by surprise with all the hustle and bustle of a modern Mediterranean city. Steel and glass blend with the baroque, and palm trees look down on chic boutiques, gardens and cafes. As you enter the narrow streets of the Medina, centuries slip away as small shops with treasures of brass, olive, wood leather, carpets, pottery and bright garments spill out onto the street. Also the gateway to the ruins of Carthage.
The Rock of Gibraltar has been under British control since 1713. Plenty of historical sites, castle ruins, walls and gates for history buffs, with tax-free shops for spenders! Beyond its geographical import at the entrance to the Mediterranean, it is particularly famous for its well-protected Barbary Apes living in nature. Superstition dictates the Brits will lose "The Rock" if ever the apes leave.
Sprawled over seven hills, Lisbon is big, and quite sensational really, filled to overflowing with massive monuments, historic structures, chic boulevards (excellent shopping) and colossal plazas. Open-sided trams zoom you from one amazing sight to another! Cascais ("Cashkysh") is a delightful seaside village with a roomy beach, pretty restaurants and bars.
Spain Vigo is packed full of Romanesque and Gothic structures and offers several sandy beaches, stunning scenery, and a huge variety in super-fresh seafood - best experienced at a terrific little beachfront café! Consider the shore excursion to the pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela, which enshrines the remains of St. James the Apostle.
Splendid, beautiful, medieval Bruges is known as 'the Venice of the north' and is an important city, one of the crown jewels of Belgium. A stroll through its tiny medieval streets, and a carriage or canal ride provide enchanting experiences. Sample the chocolates and waffles and do try one of Belgium's 350 beers!
Hans Christian Andersen's wistful Little Mermaid greets all who sail into Copenhagen's historic harbour. Stroll the trafficfree Stroget or visit Tivoli Gardens, the world's first amusement park. Other sights include Christianborg Palace, Rosenborg Castle and the royal residence at Amalienborg.
