The second largest city in Egypt after Cairo, Alexandria offers both cosmopolitan and bohemian cultures. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C. and the setting for the Cleopatra and Marc Antony drama, Alexandria's status as a beacon of culture is symbolized by Pharos, the legendary lighthouse that was one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The largest seaside resort on Cyprus (once held by Crusaders under Richard the Lionheart), Limassol has long been know for its wine festivals. A wide seafront promenade and bustling, narrow shopping streets ¿ which run the gamut from ultra-modern to traditional and handmade - join lovely beaches, the best nightlife on the island and archeological treasures to make Limmasol a carefree holiday bonanza.
Israel's third largest city and one of its prettiest, Haifa has both mountains and sea and is the country's largest port. The city is the world centre of the Bahai Faith and offers a mix of modern neighbourhoods, older districts, churches and mosques. Particularly active beaches deliver first rate surfing and sailing.
Katakolon is the port for Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games. Never a town, always a sanctuary, Olympia was a national shrine to the Greeks and contained only buildings associated with games and worship. Once home to treasures such as art, monuments, altars, theatres, statues and temples (the most famous of which is the Temple of Zeus) here, each Olympic year, the still sacred flame is set alight.
The birthplace of Christopher Columbus, Genoa was a great seaport as early as the 3rd century B.C., and once a jumping off point to the Crusades. Now a modern metropolis, whose culture and history have engrossed historians and visitors for centuries, Genoa stretches 12 miles along the coast.
